Solving the Copyright Mystery

Welcome to Solving the Copyright Mystery: A copyright Tutorial

Meet Colleen, the College's Copyright Detective. People from all over campus come to her when they are stumped by a copyright problem. When is it ok to use an image found on the internet? Does an instructor who places a video of herself teaching a class online have copyright on that video? Can a math instructor give her students copies of a textbook that she found for free online?

Copyright can be a tough nut to crack. It offers important protections for creators of intellectual property. It also allows the public to have limited free use of that property for commentary, study and teaching, and to create new intellectual property. This tutorial will follow Colleen in her quest for clues that will help students and faculty get answers about copyright, fair use, obtaining permission to use copyrighted works when necessary, and how to find alternative resources.

Hopefully, this tutorial will help you to solve the mystery surrounding copyright. What is it? Why is it important? How can you avoid violating copyright law?

How much do you know about copyright? Before you go through the module test yourself with the Pre-Test Quiz and print out results for your own informaiton or email the results to your instructor.
